Sidecargate 7 Dec 2003
report Ian Hannam, Pic's Colin Jones
A fresh & chilly morning greeted the 10 eager charioteers who were to contest the clubs 4th annual sidecar pre-xmas social trial around the picturesque Wye Valley. 20 sections & a special test over a 35 mile route of green lanes & private ground were set by Stan Howitt.
Two club "virgins" had an initiation into passengering, Rod Jones partnered the evergreen Julian Bishop & Chairman Ian Vessey with Gerald Dyer. Most crews were making light work of of the drying conditions but "passengerless" Pearson was so enthused after group 2 he rode off, Dave Evans could only look on & hitch a lift. Pearson was found half a mile later in the hedge, laughing!! Organised as a conducted trial the 2 groups joined up for a warming coffee stop at the halfway point, provided by club member Paul Waycott, First half stories were being exchanged when Vessey appeared, with helmet removed it was more like a steam train had arrived.
The special test gave great entertainment with Hannam/Kirby showing everyone how slippery the stop box was by recording the only failure.
The event outcome hinged on the last section, Brown, Burdge, Young & Pearson were all clean with Hannam on 1. The rocks on the climb changed all that with Young dropping one along with Hannam & Pearson was caught for 3.
So Brown/Bell triumphed over the Burdges on the special test.
