Ben's Press report

A FAMILIAR name came out on top but with more marks against his name than is usual in a centre championship trial.

That Simon Welch lost 46 marks illustrated the challenge the West Glos and Dean Forest MCC had set over Stony Green's large rocks in the heart of the Forest of Dean.

The reigning Western Centre champion finished only six marks ahead of ever-improving schoolboy Jake Luter-Evans. Welch recorded four maximum five mark losses, whereas the South Wales youngster lost five fives, and that proved to be the difference.

Another youngster, Ben Bowkett, made a welcome return and came third on 71, just ahead of M Johnson, Barry Husband and Henry Bendall, who all lost marks in the 70s.

Rather than one or two sections making the difference in marks lost, the trial as a whole was a battle of attrition, with marks being taken on every section. Many riders recorded high scores but there were only three retirements.

Ben Toms again topped the clubman 50/50 class, only five marks ahead of A Reed and nine marks ahead of Ben Bishop.

Alternative route winner Shane Gunn rolled back the years on his Yamaha TYZ 250, losing 35 marks, just five ahead of Tim Wheeler.

Terry Price won the easy route on just one mark lost.
