Last of the Summer Wine Club - Trail riding The Gap
Words and Photos By Colin Jones
Everyone should do The Gap before they die, or before it is closed forever, which ever comes first. Rod and Colin thought they should make the most of it being March as the Gap is only open to motor vehicles during March and September (plus 2 weeks into Oct).
Monday should have been a quiet day but we managed to meet 6 TRF types at south end of Gap and were duly entertained by their riding skills climbing the gully. We waited patiently as some walkers went through... then proceeded to do our centipede imitation with no audience. The view from the Gap was superb, we could even see far enough north to the only sunny patch in Wales, which was passing rapidly over Eppynt ranges.
We chose to brave the ford at Cantref Church Steps and were surprised with how easy it was then returned to the trailer at Talybont via another ford and the run back down the Dolygaer track. Rod found a new way of tackling the boulder strewn track by head butting them. Sadly this didn't work to well despite having a full face for alleged better protection. Luckily this was only a few hundred yards from the car so didn't ruin a pleasant day in the beacons.
